Thurston sits out Maroons training

Queensland five-eighth Johnathan Thurston sat out training at Coolum after being struck down by a virus.

Thurston was told to remain in his room by doctors with Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans filling in for the North Queensland star in the team’s final training session before flying down to Sydney on Sunday.

The 30-year-old is not expected to miss the game and will fly into a rainswept Sydney with the rest of the Maroons team where they’ll continue their preparations for Wednesday’s series opener at ANZ Stadium.

Winger Darius Boyd came through the training and set to take his place in the side for game one following an ankle injury.

South Sydney back-rower Ben Te’o also trained after suffering a hamstring problem late last week.

NSW hooker Robbie Farah said he fully expects Thurston to play next Wednesday and news he’d missed training would have not affect on their team’s preparations.

The Blues had an opposed session against Cronulla’s under-20s at a rainswept Kogarah Oval on Sunday.

“It means nothing to us, but we are not focused on them,” Farah said.

“We are just focusing on us. This is our last major session.

“They are a great side so it won’t change too much for the them, and I don’t know if he is out. But if it’s just a virus then he’ll play.”
