Trainer Rebecca Bayliss is counting down the days until her stable star Final Siren returns to racing, following an impressive trial win at Belmont on Monday that signaled the four-year-old is ready to shine again this winter.
Having developed physically and mentally over the break, Final Siren appears to be a more complete racehorse heading into this preparation. Ridden by Lucy Fiore in the 1000m heat, he showed class and composure, settling behind the speed before accelerating smartly along the rail in the straight.
Buoyed by the performance, Bayliss has confirmed Final Siren will resume in the Listed Beaufine Stakes at Pinjarra on July 5, a race where she’s hoping his strong fresh record will pay dividends.
“I was really, really pleased with him,” Bayliss told Racing WA.
“He came back from his break really well and I was happy with the way he spelled.
“We were nearly going to go one after the Bunbury Stakes and I galloped him after, but I thought we needed to tip him out.
“I think we made the right call because if you go that one more and it takes forever to get over it.
“This time he’s come back nicely, obviously we know he can do it, but you have to have them right, don’t you.
“The plan is to go and tackle the Beaufine Stakes and after that we’ll wait and see how he gets through it.”
Final Siren has been a standout since his dominant debut win at Albany and delivered his biggest victory yet in January, capturing the Mount Barker Sprint (1300m). He followed that with Listed placings, including third in the Pinjarra Classic (1300m) and a runner-up finish in the Bunbury Stakes (1400m).
Bayliss believes her consistent gelding, who has never finished worse than sixth in 14 career starts, is ready to make an even greater impact in stakes company this time around.
“I think so,” Bayliss said.
“He seems to be a little more professional now.
“He knows his job and wants to get it done.
“Even in his action he looks more coordinated.
“I think he has improved, we’re hoping he has.
“He made a nice step-up last prep.
“I know a lot will depend on barriers and what goes in it, but after today (Monday) you would think he’ll run well in the Beaufine.
“I think he’s up there.”
Fiore, who has partnered Final Siren in his past three starts, gave a glowing post-trial report to Bayliss.
“She was really happy and said he felt great,” Bayliss said.
“She said he trialled really nicely.”
Final Siren has earned over $300,000 with six wins and five placings. He thrives first-up (two wins from three starts) and handles soft ground well, making him a live chance in the Beaufine Stakes.
