Back on his old stomping ground on Wednesday, Tasmania quick Jackson Bird wasted no time in picking up where he left off after his sensational Sheffield Shield rookie season.

Bird took 3-59 off 21 overs at Bankstown Oval, the ground he called home for three seasons before moving to Tasmania prior to the 2011-12 campaign.

He whipped out Peter Nevill and Nic Maddinson in his first spell and didn’t concede a run until his 21st ball.

Bird returned late in the day to dismiss Brad Haddin, who starred with 114 in the Blues score of 7-302.

“The wicket is pretty flat, so there was no real local knowledge there, but it’s always nice to come back to the home ground,” Bird said.

Bird played for NSW at under 17, under 19 and second XI level, but couldn’t crack the Blues side.

“I wasn’t really bitter or anything like that,” Bird said.

“It’s just how it was at the time, there’s a lot of good fast bowlers going around.”

The move proved fruitful for Bird who was chosen for the Australia A tour of England after winning the Sheffield Shield rookie of the year award.

While happy to return to Bankstown, Bird wouldn’t have minded if the game had been scheduled at the SCG, the Blues traditional home base.

“I’ve never played there, so it would have been nice to play there,” Bird said.

He was disappointed Tasmania allowed NSW to recover as well as they did from being 3-7.

“We let them get away a little bit and once again at the end with the first couple of overs with the new ball they scored pretty quickly which is a little bit disappointing,” Bird said.

“Seven for 302 on that type of wicket is pretty good going by us.”
