Snapshot of round 23 of the NRL

* Quote of the Round: “Good on him, it’s not his team.” – Shane Flanagan after being told Andrew Fifita looked desperate to return to the field while warming the bench for half Cronulla’s win over North Queensland. When he did get on he scored and pointed at the coach’s box but claimed it was a message for assistant Jim Dymock.

* Man of the Round: Lachlan Lewis celebrated his 22nd birthday in style, booting a 35-metre field goal from the left of the posts to kick Canterbury to a 27-26 win over the Warriors. It was the first field goal of his career in any grade. He also scored a try and set up another.

* Stat that Matters: Canberra won by scoring just one try for the first time since 1987 with their 14-12 defeat of the Sydney Roosters.

* Magic Moment: Sam Williams slotting a 35-metre penalty goal from just to the left of the posts came too late to save Canberra’s season but at least gave them a 14-12 lead and the satisfaction of finally icing a match.

* Talking Point: Is Penrith on the slide? While they got away with come-from-behind wins over three bottom-eight teams in the past month, their 20-12 defeat by Newcastle has to be a concern.

* Judiciary Watch: Storm – Will Chambers (dangerous contact – crusher tackle); Panthers: Tyrone May, Viliame Kikau, Waqa Blake (contrary conduct); Knights: Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Danny Levi (contrary conduct); Roosters – Boyd Cordner (dangerous tackle), Latrell Mitchell (high tackle).

* Casualty Ward: Rabbitohs: Adam Reynolds (elbow); Storm: Cameron Smith (back), Nelson Asofa Solomona (ankle), Suliasi Vunivalu (hamstring), Brandon Smith (knee); Sharks – Jesse Ramien (ankle), Ricky Leutele (knee); Warriors – Blake Green – (calf), Gerard Beale (hamstring).

* Under Pressure: Manly’s woes continue. While Trent Barrett’s coaching future is uncertain, their collapse to Gold Coast was as bad as it gets while their average crowd at Brookvale has fallen to a 52-year low.
