News:

Dual Group One-winning mare Egg Tart will get the chance to prove she could be a 2018 Caulfield Cup horse when she runs at Caloundra.

Egg Tart hasn’t won since the 2017 Queensland Oaks (2200m) but she showed she was back on track with her second in the Group One Doomben Cup (2000m) two weeks ago.

The mare also won the Group One Schweppes Oaks in Adelaide last year.

Waller has been pleased with Egg Tart since she went down fighting to stablemate Comin’s Through in the Doomben Cup and she is one of 11 entries taken on Monday for the Group Two P J O’Shea Stakes (2200m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

“It was the first time this campaign she had got out to somewhere near the 2200 metres of the Queensland Oaks,” Waller said.

“If she races well I will start looking at whether she can measure up to the Caulfield Cup in the spring.”

The O’Shea, which carries a first prize of $122,000, is the traditional lead-up to the Brisbane Cup but Waller is looking no further than Saturday with the mare who is the equal highest-rated horse in the O’Shea on 107 alongside stablemate, French Group Two winner One Foot In Heaven.

Egg Tart has been posted the $1.85 favourite in the TAB’s first markets ahead of the Darren Weir-trained Tradesman at $6.50.

It has been a good Queensland carnival for Waller so far with quinellas in the Group One Doomben Cup, Group One Queensland Oaks (Youngstar and Another Dollar) and Group Two BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Lean Mean Machine and Zousain).
