* Roger Federer (SUI) v Noah Rubin (USA)

Two generations collide when 20-year-old Rubin, who, like the Swiss master, won the Wimbledon junior crown at 17, tries to consign the 35-year-old legend to his earliest defeat in 18 visits to the Open. Federer’s vulnerable and Rubin’s a prodigy.

* Stan Wawrinka (SUI) v Steve Johnson (USA)

Another must-see Switzerland v USA showdown and another danger match for Wawrinka after the fourth seed survived a huge five-set scare in round one. Free-hitting Johnson has never been in finer shape after shedding 7kg for the Australian summer.

* Nick Kyrgios (AUS) v Andreas Seppi (ITA)

Seppi pushed Kyrgios to the brink in Melbourne two years ago, with the Australian prevailing 8-6 in an epic fifth-set decider – a year after the Italian sent Federer crashing out in the third round. Kyrgios is expecting another tough one – and will likely get it.

* Ashleigh Barty (AUS) v Shelby Rogers (USA)

Opportunity knocks for two of the women’s game’s brightest young talents. Barty, a former Wimbledon junior champion, has never ventured to the last 32 at a slam while Rogers, a French Open quarter-finalist, is looking to back up her upset first-round win over fourth seed Simona Halep.

* Bernard Tomic (AUS) v Victor Estrella Burgos (DOM)

Tomic is bracing for a torrid time against a rugged campaigner who pushed the Australian to three tight tiebreak sets in their only previous meeting, on a Bogota hard court. Tomic is on a mission to prove his doubters wrong but the Dominican Republic’s finest is also talking up his chances. Stay tuned.
