Beer hopes for more shining Stars

Michael Beer insists the Melbourne Stars can still make the Big Bash League finals after their breakout win over Melbourne Renegades.

After making 169 with the bat, the Stars were ruthless with the ball, dismissing the Renegades’ formidable line-up for just 57.

Not a single Renegade could muster more than 10 on a decent batting wicket, as the Reds wilted in the face of the Stars’ assault on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium.

The left-arm orthodox spinner led the charge with 2-14 off his four overs for man of the match honours.

After three losses to start the season, the Stars performance was as staggering as it was overdue.

The Stars added to their galaxy of talent in the off-season by signing Kevin Pietersen and Beer, and were named BBL favourites in pre-season.

But it’s taken until the new year to get their first win, and Beer says the Stars could “definitely” play finals.

“You never know, it’s a funny game T20,” he said.

“We’ve lost a couple big-time and then we’ve absolutely won one like that.

“If we take momentum from this game and keep playing as good as what we can do, we’re going to be hard to beat every game.

Beer said the result wasn’t a result of a new focus or strategy after three losses.

“We’ve done nothing outside the norm,” he said.

“Our vibe has been up the whole time and I think that showed tonight.

“Things clicked our way and we’ve run with it.

Such was the magnitude of the win, it catapulted the Stars from rock-bottom into sixth place.

Gone was their league-worst net run rate of -2.098, replaced with a 0.001 positive result to put them back in the finals frame.

With a two-day turnaround before taking on second-placed Sydney Sixers, Beer is hoping for the good times to roll on.

“If we play well, we can beat anyone, and we know that so that’s what we’re going with,” he said.

“Back at the G, we’ll hopefully take some momentum out of this and continue there.”
