Watson battles short ball concerns

Shane Watson says he is only just coming to terms with Phillip Hughes’ death in the lead-up to the SCG Test against India.

Watson was on the SCG alongside three of his Australian teammates in David Warner, Brad Haddin and Nathan Lyon on that fateful day in November in the Sheffield Shield match between NSW and South Australia.

He returned to the ground for the first time in a cricketing capacity on Saturday ahead of the fourth and final Test against India starting on Tuesday.

“It was a time I wasn’t really looking forward to, to be honest coming back to the ground,” Watson said.

“In the end I suppose enough time has passed to be able to find my personal way to be able to deal with what happened to Phil.

“But I’m sure once we are out in the middle and are playing those visions will come back.”

Watson was struck in the helmet by a James Pattinson bouncer in the nets in the lead-up to the MCG Test and admittedly that was something else that had shaken him up.

“(The) Melbourne (Test) was the first time after, especially getting through the short ball, that I started to feel comfortable, more comfortable again,” he said.

“For the first couple of Test matches it was always in the back of my mind.

“Obviously because of what I saw and trying to go through and process what happened that day out there.

“But Melbourne was the first time I really felt the confidence grow back in me again.

“And feel that myself and my game and my instincts are going to be good enough to hopefully play the short ball well enough and hopefully not get myself in too much trouble.”
