Australia to go hard at England: Lanning

Meg Lanning has warned England to expect Australia to come hard at them as the Southern Stars seek to regain the Ashes by emulating the feat of the mens team by winning five straight games.

With the Ashes determined by results across all three formats, Australia must win the last two one-day games and all three Twenty20 internationals, after losing the one-off Test and first ODI.

Lanning, who captained the team in the first ODI in the absence of injured regular skipper Jodie Fields, conceded her team had its back to the wall.

“That’s right and I think that’s when we play best,” Lanning said.

“We’re going to come out really hard in the next few games and make sure that England know that we’re coming really hard at them.”

Dashing opener Lanning, who on Monday won the Belinda Clark Medal for being Australia’s premier female cricketer of the past year, stressed the players needed to back their attacking instincts to turn things around.

After winning the T20 and one-day world championships in October 2012 and February 2013 respectively, Australia have come off second best against their old Ashes rival.

England won the series on home soil in 2013 and need to win just one of the five remaining games in Australia to retain the Ashes.

“We haven’t been able to halt that momentum and really swing it our way,” Lanning said.

“They’ve done really well over the last six months and they are playing a really good brand of cricket, so we’re going to have to change things pretty quickly.

“We’ve got the chance to do that on Thursday (in the second ODI in Melbourne), but we’ve definitely got the team to do it, I think.

“The attacking nature that a lot of our players play with is going to be crucial to us winning these five games.”

Lanning said watching the Australian men complete a clean sweep over England had been inspiring to their female counterparts.

“The passion that they played with was certainly something I was really happy to be watching and certainly something that we looked at as a team and we probably need to bring to be able to win our Ashes back.” Lanning said.
