Tigers are fine without Benji: Farah

Captain Robbie Farah says the Wests Tigers have enjoyed a seamless transition into life at the NRL club without superstar Benji Marshall.

Despite his indifferent form last season, Marshall’s departure to rugby union has left a hole at the joint-venture but after beginning pre-season training this week Farah insists it is one that can be filled.

“I don’t think we have missed a beat really,” Farah said on Tuesday.

“The boys say they have been training well, the halves are going well, there is a lot of competition there for the person who wants the no.6 jersey.

“We are really excited about the challenge. Obviously it is going to be difficult to replace Benji but it is a challenge we are looking forward to.

“It is different (without Benji) and it is always hard when you lose a player you have played so many years alongside.

“But it is not the first time I have been through it. I have been here my whole career and one by one they have all seemed to move on. There are a few of us left and we have got a few back in Patty Richards and Deany Halatau but that’s part of footy, life goes on and you just have to move on.”

A member of the Australian squad that reclaimed the World Cup in November Farah, and Marshall have long been synonymous with the Tigers and spearheaded the club’s NRL campaigns through much of the last decade including their 2005 premiership triumph.

With former five-eighth Marshall gone Farah said he doesn’t now feel a weightier burden of leadership on his shoulders.

“I don’t see it that way,” the NSW hooker said.

“I am the captain here, that (leadership) comes with the territory. I have a good leadership group around me that helps me out every day.

“I will just keep doing what I have been doing.

“I don’t think my role will change too much.”
