McVeigh talks up Hawks ahead of AFL GF

Captain Jarrad McVeigh has labelled AFL grand final opponents Hawthorn an unbelievable team, foreshadowing a ferocious contest on Saturday.

The Swans had their final SCG training session on Thursday ahead of an afternoon flight to Melbourne.

“We’re fully focused and know what we have to do to win this game of football,” McVeigh said.

Sydney’s only injury concern, forward Sam Reid, seemed to be moving freely.

But the session was closed before he did any strenuous testing of the knee he jarred in last Friday night’s preliminary final.

McVeigh stressed both teams’ strength was in the midfield.

“Forwards at both ends are quite dangerous and the defenders work well together,” McVeigh said.

“We both ended up on top of the ladder with the same points. It’s going to be a cracker.

“A third grand final in a row, they are an unbelievable team and a prelim (final) before that, so they’ve been up for so long.

“We highly respect these guys and how they go about it.

“It’s going to be a huge task.

“It’s always won in the midfield I think.”

While much of the leadup has focused on Sydney and former Hawthorn forward Lance Franklin, McVeigh stressed the Swans weren’t looking for statistically outstanding individual performances.

“You don’t have to go out and kick five or six, goals or get 40 touches. It’s just about doing team things,” McVeigh said.
