Youzhny out of Open

Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny has earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first men’s seed to lose at the Australian Open.

Youzhny, the 14th seed, made a three-hour bid for survival in sweltering heat before losing 6-4 3-6 6-3 3-6 6-3 to Germany’s Florian Mayer in their second round match.

Mayer’s victory on the second day of sweltering conditions in Melbourne equalled his best performance at an Australian Open.

Apart from Youzhny, the only seeded players missing from the men’s draw are Tommy Haas and John Isner who both retired from their first-round matches with injuries.

Also into the third round on day three are seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych who defeated France’s Kenny De Schepper 6-4 6-1 6-3, and ninth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet who handled the heat better than Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko.

Gasquet won the second-round match 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 6-4 who is heading for a likely fourth round meeting with 17th seed Tommy Robredo of Spain.
