Young Aussie realises French tennis dream

One of Australia’s most promising junior tennis prospects will test herself against the world’s best next month on the famous French Open courts at Roland Garros.

Twelve-year-old Destanee Aiava from Narre Warren in Victoria has been chosen by Tennis Australia to compete at the fourth edition of the future tennis aces tournament.

Sixteen players from around the world will converge on the clay vying for the under 13 title from June 7-9. Tournament ambassador and six-time French Open champion Steffi Graf will be on centre court to play an exhibition alongside the finalists.

Australia’s Fed Cup coach and former French Open semi-finalist, Nicole Bradtke believes it will be an an important learning experience for the youngster.

“The international court time will be invaluable for building her tennis career and she will also experience first-hand, the buzz and excitement that surrounds the French Open,” Bradtke said.

Aiava herself is simply looking forward to the challenge of testing herself against the best of her international peers.

“I’ve not played outside Australia before so I’m really excited to be competing with other girls my age from around the world,” she said.

“The Longines tournament will be a real test for me, but I like playing on clay and think I have the determination and aggression to match any opponent.”
