Williams, Muguruza into Wimbledon quarters

Five-time champion Venus Williams has advanced to her 10th Wimbledon semi-finals with a record-equalling 86th victory at the All England Club.

The oldest player left in the draw ended the 11-match winning streak of the youngest, French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, with a 6-3 7-5 victory on Monday.

Her success matched sister Serena’s record of match wins on London’s hallowed grass courts and thrust the 37-year-old into a last-four showdown on Thursday with either world No.2 Simona Halep of sixth-seeded Brit Johanna Konta.

Bidding to become the oldest champion in the open era, Williams slammed eight aces and dropped serve only once in the 73-minute encounter.

Former runner-up Garbine Muguruza earlier breezed comfortably into the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-4 win over seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The 14th-seeded Spaniard prevailed in just an hour and 15 minutes and will now face either Magdalena Rybarikova or the Pat Cash-coached Coco Vandeweghe.

Runner-up to Serena Williams in 2015, Muguruza has emerged from a form slump to reach her first grand slam semi-final since reigning at Roland Garros last year.

Her straight-sets victory Kuznetsova came a day after the 23-year-old removed world No.1 Angelique Kerber from the draw.

Muguruza saved a break point on her second service game – the only one she faced all match – but roared back to break to love en route to taking the opening set.

Another early break in the second piled the pressure on Kuznetsova, the 32-year-old with two grand slam titles to her name who was appearing in the quarter-finals for the first time in 10 years.

Muguruza, who has reached the last four for the loss of one set, brought up match point with an ace down the middle and clinched victory with another unreturnable delivery.
