Wells retains women’s cycling cup lead

A well-timed solo break from Joanne Hogan netted her round two of the Santos Cup cycling series as Kimberley Wells kept the overall lead.

Hogan broke clear of a lead group of 11 riders with seven laps left in the criterium at suburban Prospect in Adelaide on Monday.

She held on for a clear win, leaving her rivals to contest the sprint for second.

Wells won that high-speed finish to take second after her win in round one.

She is the form rider in the field and should take the overall title in the three-race series.

Hogan won the silver medal earlier this month in the road race at the national championships in Victoria, while Wells took out the Australian criterium title.

Nationals medallists featured prominently in race two – road race bronze medallist Carla Ryan also gained a break on her own.

But the former Australian champion had to rejoin the main field after she crashed.

The series ends on Wednesday with another late afternoon criterium at Hyde Park, south of the Adelaide CBD.
