Stan Wawrinka has continued his quest for a second Australian Open crown with a straight-sets second-round win over American Steve Johnson.
The fourth seed’s 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory was far more routine than Monday night’s desperate five-set comeback win.
It marks his ninth consecutive appearance in the Australian Open third round, and he will next face Serbian Viktor Troicki, a five-set winner over Italian Paolo Lorenizi.
In line for a fourth-round meeting with Australian No.1 Nick Kyrgios, Wawrinka said he was satisfied to get the job done in less than two hours.
“I’m happy with the match – happy with my level, my focus, and I’m happy to get through in three sets,” the 31-year-old Swiss said.
“I was moving well and feeling good.”
Wawrinka said he felt fresh on the practice court so wasn’t concerned about how he would back up after his tough first-round battle against Slovakian Martin Klizan.
Wawrinka served 11 aces, registering an 87 per cent success rate, which he was delighted with.
“I’m really happy with my serve in general,” he said.
“I’m mixing it up and being aggressive.”
This week, Wawrinka posted a photo on Twitter of himself winning the 2014 crown, which was his breakthrough major title, adding another two since.
He said it was a memory he treasured.
“I remember everything about that two weeks, especially the final, playing late, finishing late, the trophy ceremony and everything,” Wawrinka said.
“It was my first one here, so is always going to be something special to come back here.”
