It’s back to doubles for John-Patrick Smith after he was sent spinning out of the Wimbledon men’s singles by experienced Italian Andreas Seppi.
The Townsville lefty, who won three matches to qualify for his second appearance at the All England Club, was no match for the 34-year-old world No.50 who strolled to a 6-2 6-4 6-1 victory.
Smith will partner experienced American Nicholas Monroe, who he reached the quarter-finals of the US Open with last year, after being dispatched in just 83 minutes by Seppi, who broke his serve seven times.
He will also play in the mixed doubles, although his partner has not yet been confirmed with the draw being made on Wednesday.
“It was pretty tough day, he played very well, returned well, served well,” Smith told AAP.
“I had a little chance in the second where I broke him but I let it go when it was 4-4 and I was up 30-love and serving.
“From there he played pretty much lights out.
“It is disappointing to go out in that fashion. I put a lot of work in and prepared as well as I could.
“These are the events that you want to do well and make a push at.”
Smith will head to America after Wimbledon for the lead-up events to next month’s US Open.
“I love playing out there at Flushing Meadows, it’s a great event,” he said.
“I’ve qualified twice before so hopefully I can get back there again.”
