Vanquished Berdych says ‘nobody cares’

Vanquished Czech Tomas Berdych claimed “nobody cares” what the players think after blaming savage wind for blowing away his big chance of reaching a second grand slam final.

Berdych, who ousted world No.1 Roger Federer in the quarters, hit 62 unforced errors in a 5-7 6-2 6-1 7-6 (9-7) US Open semi-final loss to Olympic champion Andy Murray on a blustery Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“Probably I made like 62 in all the matches before I get to the semi-finals, so I don’t see any reason that my game would just crash in that part,” Berdych moaned.

“So it was something that really affected my game, but that’s how it is.

“The wind blow it away from me.”

As a forecast severe storm closed in on New York, the second semi-final between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer was suspended for the day with Ferrer leading 5-2 with a service break in the opening set.

As wind gusts of around 100kph blew rubbish onto centre court at times, Berdych felt his semi-final should never have gone ahead.

“I think that our sport deserved to have some rule or if the conditions are like that that – you don’t play because of the rain,” said the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up.

“We play in grand slam in such a big tournament like this one and especially missing the roof, it’s something which should at least (be considered).

“We are here in States where they really love show. Actually, this is not about show. This is just about somehow to try to deal with the conditions and then trying to put ball over the net.

“Sometimes (that) was even impossible.”

Asked if officials had even raised the possibility of postponing the match with him, Berdych said: “Nobody cares”.
