US Open singles champ to get record $2.88m

The 2013 US Open singles champions will earn a record $US2.6 million ($A2.88 million) apiece this year.

A player who loses in the first round of singles at Flushing Meadows will make $US32,000 ($A35,473), a jump of 39 percent from last year’s $US23,000. ($A25,496)

Players who exit in the second round will get $US53,000 ($A58,752), a rise of 43 percent.

Last year’s singles champions, Serena Williams and Andy Murray, won $US1.9 million ($A2.11 million) each.

The total payout, including per diems for players, will be $US34.3 million ($A38.02 million), up from $US25.5 million ($A28.27 million) in 2012.

Play starts at the US Open on August 26.
