Giant American John Isner cut a frustrated figure during his 6-3 6-2 Hopman Cup loss to world No.8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Perth Arena on Tuesday night.
Isner, with strapping applied to the outside of his right knee, never looked comfortable against Tsonga, who controlled the match from start to finish and made the most of his opponent’s limited court movement.
World No.14 Isner’s bid to land early winners backfired badly as he sent a flurry of shots either into the net or wide of the target.
Tsonga wrapped up the win in just 55 minutes, with Isner committing 21 unforced errors to Tsonga’s four.
Isner threw his hat to the ground in frustration during the second set romp, and looked to be going through the motions as Tsonga pounced.
The loss was Isner’s second of the tournament following his 7-6 (7-0) 7-6 (7-5) defeat to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson on Sunday.
“He’s always offensive and I have to move quickly,” Tsonga said.
“I’m really happy. I played some good tennis.”
Former world No.1 Venus Williams can square up the tie with victory with victory over Mathilde Johansson.
