Tomljanovic advances in impressive fashion

Ajla Tomljanovic has progressed to the second round of Wimbledon for the first time in four years after beating 2018 quarter-finalist Daria Kasatkina.

Tomljanovic prevailed 6-3 6-1 against the woman who beat current world No.1 Ashleigh Barty last year in emphatic fashion to continue her outstanding form in 2019.

The 26-year-old Australian No.2 is finally fulfilling the potential she showed when reaching the last-16 of the French Open when she was 21, with three finals appearances in nine months and achieving a career-high ranking of 39 in April.

It was only her fifth first-round victory in her last 16 grand slam starts and a hugely impressive display against a player ranked in the top-10 only last October.

Tomljanovic came racing out of the blocks in the opening set breaking her opponent early, only for the Russian 22-year-old to hit back immediately and level the set at 2-2.

But the Australian didn’t let that setback affect her and she broke again before serving out the set comfortably to draw first blood on Court 16.

Visibly bolstered by her impressive start, Tomljanovic then charged into a 4-0 lead in the second set before breaking Kasatkina for a third time to close out the match in just over an hour.
