Bernard Tomic’s talented younger sister has won through to the second round of the Australian Open junior girls’ event at Melbourne Park.
Sara Tomic, just 14, received a standing ovation after battling for two-and-a-quarter hours to defeat Czech Gabriela Pantuckova 2-6 6-2 6-4 on Saturday.
Court eight was packed for Tomic’s match and she didn’t disappoint, rallying from a set down just as big brother Bernard did on Thursday against German Daniel Brands to set up his third-round showdown on Saturday night with Roger Federer.
It was her first-ever win at a grand slam.
Sara Tomic, who claimed the Australian under-14 claycourt championship last year in her home state of Queensland, next faces German fourth seed Antonia Lottner for a place in the last 16.
The youngster says her goal is to emulate Bernard’s achievements on the court and her dream is to become world No.1.
