Tomic withdraws from Italian Open

Bernard Tomic has withdrawn from the Italian Open, just days after his father and coach was barred from getting accreditation to upcoming tournaments because of an assault investigation.

A story on the Italian Open website on Friday said world No.53 Tomic pulled out of next week’s claycourt tournament in Rome and will be replaced by Xavier Malisse.

Tomic’s father, John, is scheduled to go on trial in a Madrid court next Tuesday on allegations that he headbutted Bernard’s training partner, Thomas Drouet, last weekend.

John Tomic disputed the charges.

The ATP said it would not give John Tomic tournament credentials while it investigates what happened.
