Bernard Tomic has upset seventh seed David Ferrer to power into the third round of the Shanghai Masters, but fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios has made an explosive exit from the tournament.

Tomic’s 6-4 6-2 victory is a big blow to Ferrer’s hopes of qualifying for the eight-man season-ending championships but pushed the Australian No.1 to within a win of his eighth quarter-final of the year.

Kyrgios lost 1-6 6-4 6-4 to Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori and also faces a potential 28-day ban from the ATP Tour after receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct warning while on six month’s probation.
