Australian teenager Bernard Tomic has suffered his fifth straight first-round defeat, bundled out of the ATP’s Swiss Open in Gstaad by Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Eighth seed Tomic, who battled bad form and illness during the short grass-court season, could not get to grips with his world number 47 opponent on Monday and fell 6-0 6-4 in 59 minutes.

Paire swept the first set despite landing only three first serves against the 45th-ranked Tomic, who was seeded eighth after getting a wild-card entry to the clay-court tournament.

Paul-Henri Mathieu continued his comeback from injury with a fine 6-3 7-6 (7-4) win over Russia’s Igor Andreev, building on the only break in the match in the first set.

Austrian qualifier Martin Fischer beat local Sandro Ehrat 6-2 6-4, and in another clash of qualifiers, Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic beat Italy’s Matteo Viola 6-3 2-6 6-3.
