Tomic can end Roddick’s career

Australian teenager Bernard Tomic has the chance to end Andy Roddick’s tennis career after the American on Thursday revealed the US Open would be his final tournament.

Roddick, the 2003 champion and former world No.1, made the unexpected announcement on his 30th birthday.

He and Tomic will square off in the Friday night feature match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I just feel like it’s time,” Roddick said after calling a snap press conference at Flushing Meadows.

Roddick said he no longer felt he could play on for another year and that New York, where he won his only grand slam title nine years ago, was the perfect place to say goodbye.

Earlier on Thursday, Matt Ebden lost his second-round match to leave Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt as the last Australians standing in the men’s singles.

Ebden succumbed 6-4 6-2 6-2 after unsuccessfully disputing a line dubious call that ultimately cost the West Australian the opening set.

With games on serve until 4-4, Ebden carelessly let slip a 40-love lead, double-faulted to hand Chardy the game-point advantage and then protested when a forehand return from the 32nd seed was called in.

It looked out but, with no replay challenges available on Court 8, Ebden’s angry exchange with chair umpire Jake Garner was all in vain.

After losing the following game to drop the set, it was all downhill for Ebden, with Chardy running away with the match.

Compounding Ebden’s frustration was the realisation he’d let slip a golden opportunity.

Had he won, the 24-year-old would have played unseeded Martin Klizan after the Slovak eliminated French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a major surprise.

Hewitt plays Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller in his second-round match on Friday.

Defending women’s champion Samantha Stosur, the only other Australian left in the singles, takes on American Varvaro Lepchenko on Friday for a place in the last 16.
