Thiem cruises into ATP Vienna second round

Home favourite and second seed Dominic Thiem booked his place in round two at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, with a 6-4 6-3 win over Russian Andrey Rublev.

In search of his second title of the year, world No.6 Thiem broke qualifier Rublev four times to set-up a clash with French veteran Riuchard Gasquet.

The late match saw number four seed Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain defeat Argentine qualifier Guido Pella 6-2 7-6 (9-7) in one hour and 48 minutes.

Sixth seed Sam Querrey of the United States is out after he lost 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) to Albert Ramos in a match which lasted just short of three hours.

South Africa’s number seven seed Kevin Anderson also suffered a first-round loss after he went down 6-4 6-4 to Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Kyle Edmund of Great Britain progressed after his 6-2 7-6 (7-5) win against David Ferrer, while there was more home success as Austrian Dennis Novak defeated Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.

Sebastian Ofner, though, is out after his 6-3 6-4 first-round defeat to France’s world No.25 Lucas Pouille, while Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff beat Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 7-5 6-1.
