Sydney-born Brit wins Sydney International

Johanna Konta was born at Royal North Shore hospital and raised on Sydney’s northern beaches but she will take the Sydney International title back to Britain.

And, potentially, the Australian Open crown too.

Konta sent an ominous warning to rivals on Friday night, clinically dismantling world No.3 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 6-2 in the Sydney International final.

The contest lasted just one hour and 21 minutes.

“I couldn’t have played any better,” a shocked Radwanska said in the post-match ceremony.

It was the second title of Konta’s career but she enhanced her reputation as one of the most-improved players on tour, climbing to No.9 in the world rankings.

Confidence will not be an issue for Konta at the season-opening grand slam – and not only because she’s riding high after her first win over Radwanska.

The 25-year-old last year stormed to the Australian Open semis at Melbourne Park, where eventual winner Angelique Kerber ended her run.

Konta has spoken of her love of Sydney throughout the week. Sydney-based sister Eva and her husband, AFL ruckman Shane Mumford, have been her most-ardent supporters at the tournament.

“I was born here so this is a very special moment for me,” Konta said in the ceremony.

Konta, who conquered Australians Arina Rodionova and Daria Gavrilova, rising Russian Daria Kasatkina, 2014 Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard and Radwanska in Sydney, takes home a cheque for $US132,740 ($A177,000).

Konta ruthlessly attacked Radwanska’s serve throughout the match, with the Pole doing well to save six of nine break points.
