Strycova upsets Muguruza at Aust Open

Czech Barbora Strycova has sent No.3 seed Garbine Muguruza from Spain tumbling out of the third round of the Australian Open in straight sets.

The 29-year Strycova needed only one hour and 16 minutes to win 6-3 6-2 and end the campaign of Muguruza.

It’s only the second time in 39 attempts that Strycova has advanced to the last 16 of a grand slam tournament.

Her next opponent will be either two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka from Belarus or young Japanese qualifier Naomi Osaka.

Muguruza’s demise leaves No.8 seed Angelique Kerber from Germany as the highest remaining seed in the bottom half of the women’s draw.

Kerber takes on American Madison Brengle later on Saturday afternoon.

Also through to the fourth round is Australian-born Johanna Konta, who proved far too good for Czech Denisa Allertova in a 6-2 6-2 victory on Saturday.

Britain’s Konta will now take on Russian No.21 seed Elena Makarova, who upset upset another Czech player, ninth seed Karolina Pliskova, 6-3 6-2.

Makarova also made an impressive run to the semis at Melbourne Park last year.
