Samantha Stosur may prioritise training over playing lead-up events for Wimbledon in a bid to buck her poor run of results at the grass court grand slam.
Stosur revealed after her French Open exit she had not yet entered any grass court events prior to Wimbledon, starting on June 24.
The Australian world No.9 has played grass court tournaments at Eastbourne and ‘s-Hertogenbosch in recent seasons but, having progressed past the second round only once at Wimbledon in 2009, is considering a different strategy.
Stosur won’t finalise her schedule until after her women’s doubles campaign alongside Francesca Schiavone at Roland Garros but there’s a chance she could go into Wimbledon cold.
“I decided last year I’d maybe try something a little bit different, who knows if that will change,” Stosur told AAP.
“At the moment I’ll still play doubles here and try and go as far as we can and then assess whatever time we’ve got and get stuck into the practice and try and have a good Wimbledon.”
The All England Lawn Tennis Club has not proved a happy hunting ground for Australia’s top-ranked player.
Her opening-round win over Carla Suarez Navarro last year was her first at the tournament since 2009.
But she’s looking to get some momentum going after overcoming a calf injury that disrupted her build-up to the French Open.
Despite the disappointment of her third-round loss to Jelena Jankovic at Roland Garros, Stosur was encouraged by her performances in the earlier rounds, and at last month’s clay-court event in Rome.
“I think since Rome I’ve started to play better and you start to feel better about your tennis after having a very stop-start first five months of the year,” she said.
“It’s certainly a challenge going onto the grass for me, its never been a great time of the year for me so far, but it’s another opportunity to turn that around.”
