Stosur up to No.5 in new tennis rankings

US Open champion Samantha Stosur moved up to No.5 in the women’s tennis rankings in the latest WTA list released on Monday.

Despite the disappointment of her French Open semi-final exit to Italy’s Sara Errani, the Australian climbed one spot from sixth.

Freshly-crowned French champion Maria Sharapova returned to the top of the women’s rankings for the first time in four years and beaten finalist Errani stormed into the top 10.

Sharapova, 25, completed her set of career grand slam titles in straight sets against Errani on Saturday and the Russian tops the rankings for the fifth time in her career after her last stint there from May 19 to June 8 in 2008.

Sharapova, with 9490 points, dethrones Victoria Azarenka of Belarus (8800), with Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska third (7230).

Errani shot from 24 to 10 by virtue of her best showing at a major.
