Stosur out of Indian Wells WTA event

Samantha Stosur has been knocked out of the Indian Wells tennis tournament in California, losing her second-round match against Julia Goerges 6-4 4-6 4-6.

The Australian, who had a bye in the first round, offered up 10 break point opportunities to Georges on Sunday (AEDT), who closed out the match after more than two hours on court.

World No.18 Stosur suffered opening-round losses in her first three tournaments of the year, including at the Australian Open.

But her form of late had been a little better, reaching the quarter-finals in Taipei and Doha, before a second-round loss in Dubai a few weeks ago.

Stosur’s loss leaves Daria Gavrilova as the only Australian left in the women’s singles draw.

World No.27 Gavrilova will play Elina Svitolina, the world No.10, in the third round on Monday (AEDT).

Earlier on Sunday at Indian Wells, Angelique Kerber beat fellow German Andrea Petkovic 6-2 6-1, Venus Williams beat Jelena Jankovic 1-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 and Agnieszka Radwanska beat Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3 6-4.
