Stosur last Aussie left standing at Open

Not for the first time, and probably not the last, Samantha Stosur is the sole Australian left standing at a grand slam tennis event.

The Australian contingent at the French Open was reduced to one after teenager Ashleigh Barty bowed out in a heavy second-round defeat to Russian 12th seed Maria Kirilenko on Friday.

Stosur has become used to carrying the flag for her nation in recent years and she’s the only one of seven Australians competing at Roland Garros this year to reach the third round.

The world No.9 faces a dangerous match-up against Jelena Jankovic on Saturday and she’ll have to overcame a poor head-to-head record against the 18th-seeded Serbian.

Jankovic has won six of the nine matches between the pair, including their most recent meeting on clay in Stuttgart in April.

“It’s always tough playing Jelena,” Stosur said.

“I have to be ready to work hard and hopefully play as well, if not better than, what I have been.”

Barty’s campaign came to a brutal end as she was thumped 6-3 6-1 by Kirilenko in match played over two days because of rain.

The 17-year-old had made an encouraging start on Thursday with scores locked at 3-3 when rain forced play to be suspended for the day.

But it was a different story when play resumed on day six as Kirilenko won eight games straight en-route to victory in a powerful display.

“It’s disappointing to come out the way I did but you live and learn,” Barty said.

“Maria started really well and she was able to kind of just run away with it a little bit.

“It was just simply I was outplayed. I felt like I was playing pretty well, but just missing a few too many balls.

“Against a player (ranked) 12 in the world you’re going to get smashed when that happens.”

Barty still took encouragement from a first-round victory over Czech Lucie Hradecka, her first maiden win in six grand slams.

Fellow young gun Nick Kyrgios also lost in the second round while Bernard Tomic, Lleyton Hewitt, Marinko Matosevic and James Duckworth were all beaten in round one.
