Samantha Stosur and Ashleigh Barty will be out to keep Australian hopes alive at the French Open on Thursday.
They are the only Australians left in the singles at Roland Garros after teenager Nick Kyrgios suffered a second-round defeat to Croatian 10th seed Marin Cilic on Wednesday.
Barty, 17, reached the second round of a grand slam for the first time with an upset 7-5 2-6 6-1 win over Czech Lucie Hradecka.
She became the 12th youngest Australian woman to win a grand slam match in the Open era and will meet Russian 12th seed Maria Kirilenko.
Australia’s top Roland Garros hope Stosur faces Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic.
Barty, ranked 183rd, had previously failed to win a match in five grand slams.
But she put the experience gained to great use against 87th-ranked Hradecka in a match that had been held over by a day due to a rain delay.
Barty, who only turned 17 last month, said she’d benefited from a tough initiation at last year’s French Open, where she suffered a heavy first-round loss to Czech Petra Kvitova.
“Last year playing Petra, it was obviously a bit of David and Goliath maybe,” Barty said.
“You can’t buy experiences like that. It’s helped me this year.
“Maybe it was too early last year but it’s certainly helped me this year.
“I was happy to go out there today and I knew that I could win. I just wanted to execute my game plan and do what I do.”
Kyrgios failed to build on his stirring first-round upset of Czech Radek Stepanek but he still gave a good account of himself in a 6-4 6-2 6-2 loss to Cilic.
The 18-year-old, the world’s top-ranked junior, still plans to play in the boys event at Roland Garros, providing a hamstring injury picked up against Cilic isn’t too serious.
Bernard Tomic, Lleyton Hewitt, Marinko Matosevic and James Duckworth all lost in the first round.
