Roberto Bautista Agut has completed a flawless ATP Cup campaign with a straight-sets victory over Dusan Lajovic to put Serbia 1-0 up over Spain in the inaugural tournament’s Sydney final.
The world No.10 had too much firepower for Lajovic, chalking up a 7-5 6-1 victory to finish with a perfect six-from-six record for the competition – without even dropping a set.
A Wimbledon semi-finalist last year, Bautista Agut is chasing a January title for the fifth successive season, having reigned in Auckland in 2016 and 2018, in Chennai in 2017 and Doha last year.
He will fancy his chances with world No.1 Rafael Nadal on his team as Spain look to follow up their Davis Cup triumph in November with title glory in the ATP Cup.
Nadal, though, will need to snap an eight-match, seven-year hardcourt losing streak to Novak Djokovic in Sunday night’s second singles match to seal victory for Spain.
Nadal hasn’t even won a set against Djokovic on a hard court since beating the Serb in the 2013 US Open final.
The world’s top two players will be renewing the greatest rivalry in Open-era tennis, with Djokovic carrying a 28-26 edge into their record 55th head-to-head showdown.
But while the two all-time greats have clashed all over the globe, this will be their first – and possibly only ever – encounter in Sydney.
Should Nadal turn the tables on Djokovic, the 2019 Australian Open finalists will likely duel again in the tie-deciding doubles.
Nadal would partner Pablo Carreno Busta, with Djokovic to team up with Victor Troicki.
