Sharapova suffering with hip injury

Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from next week’s WTA event at Stanford because of a left hip injury suffered during Wimbledon.

Tournament director Kim Hall said in a statement Monday that organisers “are disappointed for our fans.” She added that “unfortunately injuries are a part of the sport.”

The second-seeded Sharapova lost 6-3 6-4 to Michelle Larcher de Brito in the second round of Wimbledon last month. Sharapova tumbled several times during the match, complaining about court conditions, taking a medical timeout and later saying she thought she strained a hip muscle.

Sharapova announced on her website Saturday that she had hired Jimmy Connors as her new coach, one day after she parted ways with Thomas Hogstedt.
