Punters have backed Serena Williams into odds-on favouritism to win the 2012 US Open and capture her 15th Grand Slam title.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said over 90% of bets on the women’s tournament winner have been for Serena.
“We’ve taken one five figure bet on her to win at $2.10 and a heap of four figure bets too and she’s been crunched into $1.90,” Sullivan said.
“Serena was $3.25 when the market went up so she has been incredibly well supported by punters.”
Victoria Azarenka is a $6.00 second favourite ahead of Maria Sharapova at $6.25, while Australia’s Samantha Stosur is a $34 hope to repeat her 2011 performance. Stosur is a $1.10 favourite to beat Croat Petra Martic in their round 1 match.
In the men’s draw, Novak Djokovic is a $2.30 favourite ahead of Roger Federer ($3) and Andy Murray ($4.75).
Bernard Tomic is a $331 hope while Lleyton Hewitt will start the tournament as a $501 hope to repeat his 2001 performance.
