Schwartzman stands tall at US Open

Defying injury and tennis convention, Diego Schwartzman has continued his surprise run to reach the US Open quarter-finals for the first time.

In a bizarre fourth-round contest, the Argentine reeled off the last five games after being treated for a leg issue to oust 16th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 2-6 6-2.

Australian coach and commentator Darren Cahill claimed Pouille “stopped playing” believing his wounded opponent was almost done before setting up a quarter-final with 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta.

Standing just 170cm, Schwartzman is the shortest grand slam quarter-finalist since Peruvian Jaime Yzaga, who was the same height, made the last eight in New York in 1994, according to ATP officials.

The highest-ranked player in the depleted bottom half of the draw, Carreno Busta earlier ended the captivating run of 18-year-old Canadian qualifier Denis Shapovalov in three tiebreakers.

With a first-time grand slam finalist guaranteed to emerge from the wide open draw, Carreno Busta prevailed 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3) over the 2016 Wimbledon junior champion.

South African Kevin Anderson was facing veteran Italian Paolo Lorenzi and American Sam Querrey was due to play German Mischa Zverev in the late match.
