Sara Tomic wins junior clay tournament

Sara Tomic has shown the same precocious talent as her older brother Bernard by winning her first national junior title at the age of 14.

As world No.36 Bernard, 19, was celebrating his second singles rubber win in Australia’s Davis Cup victory over South Korea in Brisbane on Sunday, just 70km west in Ipswich, Sara easily won the final of the 14s national claycourt championships.

Tomic beat fellow Queenslander and doubles partner Lizette Cabrera 6-2 6-2.

“It’s a good feeling, I felt great on court and I’m really happy with the win. It’s really hard to play one of your best friends,” said Sara, who is currently No.75 in the Australian female rankings.

Sara made her grand slam debut in the Australian Open girls’ junior championship at Melbourne Park in January, losing in the first round.
