Sara Tomic failed to replicate her big brother’s Wimbledon success as she suffered a heavy defeat in the first round of the girls singles on Saturday.
The 15-year-old sister of Bernard Tomic lost 6-1 6-0 to 13th-seeded Estonian Anett Kontaveit on the opening day of juniors.
There was more joy for Australia in the boys draw with Thanasi Kokkinakis and Bradley Mousley enjoying strong opening wins.
Following her loss, Sara Tomic made a dash to her brother’s support box on Centre Court to witness his four-set upset of ninth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the men’s singles.
She struggled with an ankle problem in her loss but said she enjoyed the atmosphere with a group of Australian Fanatics cheering her on at Court 15.
“The atmosphere, the people, the crowd, the Fanatics, they were good,” Sara said.
“They’re so funny. I was trying not to laugh. It relaxes me, trying to enjoy myself on the court, working hard but trying to enjoy what you do.”
Kokkinakis opened his campaign with a 6-3 6-3 win over South African 16th seed Wayne Montgomery.
The 17-year-old was runner up at the junior Australian Open in January but has struggled since with a back injury.
Mousley beat Brit Alexander Sendegeya 6-2 6-4.
Nick Kyrgios, the world’s top-ranked junior and No.1 boys seed, opens his campaign on Monday against Britain’s Evan Hoyt.
Kyrgios failed to earn a wildcard for the men’s draw at Wimbledon, despite winning his first-round French Open match against Czech veteran Radek Stepanek last month.
