Rain stops Stosur again in Qatar

Samantha Stosur had a 1-0 lead in the first set of her second-round Qatar Open clash against eighth seed Barbora Strycova when rain again stopped play in Qatar.

The pair were locked at deuce in the match’s second game when play was halted. Stosur defeated Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets in a rain-affected opening-round clash after skipping Australia’s Fed Cup tie against Ukraine at the weekend to focus on the Doha tournament.

China’s Zhang Shuai, ranked No. 31, managed to finish her match and in the process spring an upset to defeat Spain’s Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 7-5.

This was Muguruza’s second match of the day, after most encounters on Tuesday were postponed because due to the rain.

Muguruza won her first match against Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay 6-3 6-2 in one hour and 15 minutes.

After a short break, Muguruza had to play against Zhang Shuai, who managed to eliminate her Spanish rival in two hours and 30 minutes, after advancing from the first round following a 7-6 6-3 victory against Hungary’s Timea Babos.
