Querrey stuns wilting Murray at Wimbledon

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon title defence has ended at the hands of big-serving American Sam Querrey.

Querrey, the 24th seed, roared back from two sets to one down to defeat Murray, who’s hip injury appeared to flare up during the match, 3-6 6-4 6-7 (7-4) 6-1 6-1.

Murray struggled to generate much power in the final two sets as the American romped into his first grand slam semi-final, where he awaits either Gilles Muller or Marin Cilic.

It could have been all so different for Murray, who led by a set and a break at 4-3 in the second set, but Querrey broke straight back and then broke again to take the set 6-4 and level the match.

The Brit, who was starting to have some movement issues then dug deep to win the third in a tiebreak before the momentum shifted significantly.

Murray should have been on a high but instead appeared listless when the players began the fourth set and as the Brit struggled to generate much power – especially off the serve – the big American went on the attack.

Querrey not only relied on his huge serve as he banged down 13 of his 27 aces in the final two sets but routinely teed off on Murray’s rapidly declining serve to break the Brit at will – hitting 30 winners in the same period.

For Querrey the win marks his first ever trip to the semis of a slam and he himself seemed to not believe it when speaking post-match to the BBC.

“I’m still in a little bit of shock myself,” Querrey said.

“I’m just thrilled right now. I didn’t start my best but I just kept with it, kept swinging away and found my groove in the fourth and fifth set.

“This is a dream come true. To be in the semi and to have it be at Wimbledon makes it even more special.”
