Alexei Popyrin has joined five other Australian men in straight-sets first round French Open exits, falling to South African Lloyd Harris on Tuesday.
Former French Open junior champion Popyrin was unable to produce a break point on Harris’s serve in the 6-4 6-4 7-6 (9-7) defeat at Roland Garros.
The 21-year-old Popyrin ended the match with 20 unforced errors more than Harris and 12 less winners.
Popyrin, world No.109 and a winner in all four majors last year, didn’t surrender though, saving three match points in the third set tiebreak before becoming the latest Australian casualty on another cold, overcast Paris day.
Lucky loser Marc Polmans is the last Australian standing in the men’s draw, the world No.122 is leading by two sets to one against local hope Ugo Humbert.
