Pliskova aces into Wimbledon third round

Former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova served superbly to make Wimbledon’s third round, but Caroline Wozniacki bemoaned hawkeye after tumbling out.

Czech third seed Pliskova fired down 14 aces on Court One to counter the unorthodox Hsieh Su-Wei’s fast feet and soft hands, securing a 6-3 2-6 6-4 victory in an hour and 46 minutes.

“I thought my serve was amazing today… I’d love to call myself a specialist on grass,” Pliskova said.

“This year I’m doing better and I’ve made the second week.

“On grass she’s a very tough opponent, she’s done a good job the past couple of months and I’m just super pleased that I’ve made it,” added Pliskova, who lost to Hsieh in Dubai this year.

“There’s nobody like this playing any more in the draw so I think I’ll feel much better in the next match after this test.

Up next for Pliskova is Czech compatriot Karolina Muchova who beat 20th seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.

Meanwhile, another former world No.1 Wozniacki was beaten 6-4 6-2 by Shuai Zhang on Court Two in a match where she felt let down by technology.

Wozniacki was aggrieved at two baseline calls made by Hawkeye in the second set, which ruled the ball in after being called out by the line judge, both handing Zhang the points after the Chinese challenged.

She vented her frustration to umpire Nacho Forcadell, who agreed that the ball looked out.

“It’s so ridiculous,” the Dane said.

“This is supposed to be a Championships match, this is absurd. It’s crazy.”

The calls would not have mattered had the she been able to build on a start which saw her lead 4-0 in the first set, but the Chinese acce, who dumped Caroline Garcia out in the opening round, won 12 of the next 14 games.

Wozniacki was more pragmatic in her press conference, saying that the technology was “not in the ideal place”.

“I mean, at this point it doesn’t matter. It is what it is. Maybe the Hawkeye was right. Maybe I just saw it wrong. I don’t know,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian eighth seed Elina Svitolina made hard work of it against Greek Maria Sakkari, eventually winning 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 6-2 on the seventh match point.
