Petkovic replaced by Malek at Hopman Cup

Injured Andrea Petkovic will be replaced by Tatjana Malek, allowing Germany to continue at the Hopman Cup mixed team tennis tournament, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Tommy Haas will now find himself on court at the round-robin event alongside the 113th-ranked Malek.

The 25-year-old will be arriving from Miami, one of the few Germans not already in the southern hemisphere and competing in a tournament.

Petkovic was forced out with a ruptured meniscus, the result of injuring her right knee during her first match on Satrurday.

“So it’s a rupture of the meniscus, back to Germany as soon as possible for an arthroscopy. Relieved it wasn’t the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) again,” the 126th-ranked German tweeted.

Petkovic, who spent much of 2012 dealing with other injury problems, was in tears as she had to quit the opening tie against Australia after beating Ashleigh Barty in the opening set 6-4.

“My team and I are taking this as tragically funny,” said Petkovic, who under the best-case scenario could be back on court in a month.
