Victoria’s Tammi Patterson has overcome a rain delay and a determined 14-year-old opponent to win a tennis battle stretching over two days in the Australian Open wildcard play-off.
The 22-year-old’s 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win over 14-year-old Queenslander Priscilla Hon put her through to Saturday’s semi-finals at Melbourne Park.
Their quarter-final started on Thursday, but was stalled by rain partway through the first set and had to be completed indoors on Friday.
After fighting back from a set down to win the second-set tiebreaker, Patterson had to come back from 4-1 down in the deciding set, winning the final five games.
Patterson, who ousted top seed Olivia Rogowska earlier in the week, will face NSW’s Monique Adamczak in one of the semi-finals, with Arina Rodionova (Vic) to play Bojana Bobusic (WA) in the other.
The men’s semi-finals have also been rescheduled for Saturday, after rain prevented them from being played on Friday.
Queensland’s John-Patrick Smith will play NSW’s Matt Reid and Ben Mitchell (Qld) will meet Matthew Barton (NSW).
Both finals are scheduled for Sunday, with the winners to earn a spot in the Australian Open main draw.
