One seed out of Open, another struggles

The Heineken Open lost its first seeded player on Tuesday and wasn’t far away from losing its second.

Eighth seeded Dutchman Robin Haase was knocked out of the tournament by Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, while fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany wasn’t far away from departing after needing three sets to beat Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.

Kohlschreiber says he thought Carreno Busta, who improved his ranking 650 places to 65 last year, was nervous in the first set but some mistakes of his helped the Spaniard back into the match.

“In the third set anything is possible. I think we both held our serves quite comfortably, and at the end I was maybe a little bit more comfortable, a little bit more experienced.”

Kohlschreiber, the 2008 champion on his 10th Auckland campaign, will play Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos in the second round.

Haase competed strongly throughout his marathon 2 hour 10 minute match against Garcia-Lopez. He took the first set 6-4 but Garcia-Lopez forced a deciding set with a 7-5 second set victory.

The players couldn’t be separated in the third set until a tiebreak, with Garcia-Lopez taking it out 7-4.

Garcia-Lopez will play Santiago Giraldo of Colombia in the second round.

Haase’s fellow Dutchman Igor Sijsling didn’t fare any better, losing 7-5 7-6 to Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan.

Sixth seed Benoit Paire of France had an easier time than his fellow seeds. He beat Poland’s Michal Przysiezny 6-4 6-2 in 49 minutes to earn a second round match with Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, a 6-1 3-6 6-4 winner over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Two qualifiers have made it to the second round: American qualifier Donald Young, who beat Federico Delbonis of Argentina, and Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko, who easily beat New Zealand wildcard Rubin Statham.

Both face tough second round matches: Young will play world No.3 David Ferrer, while Lacko faces third seed John Isner of the United States.
