Novak Djokovic wins Australian Open

World No.1 Novak Djokovic has won the Australian Open men’s singles title.

Djokovic, of Serbia, beat Spain’s Rafael Nadal 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-7 (7-5) 7-5 in five hours and 53 minutes in an epic final at Rod Laver Arena.

It is 24-year-old Djokovic’s fifth grand slam title, and his third Australian Open – adding to his 2008 and 2011 victories.

The match was the longest grand slam final ever, breaking the previous record of four hours and 54 minutes for the 1988 US Open final between Pat Cash and Mats Wilander.

It was also the longest match in Australian Open history – longer than Nadal’s five hour, 14 minute semi-final against Fernando Verdasco in 2009.
