Muguruza progresses to French Open last 16

Defending champion Garbine Muguruza has advanced to the fourth round of the French Open by beating Yulia Putintseva on Friday.

Muguruza’s 7-5 6-2 win over Kazakh Putintseva was greeted warmly by fans on the Philippe Chatrier court.

The fourth-seeded Muguruza was pushed in the first set but proved too strong to win in straight sets.

The Spaniard will meet 13th-seeded local hope Kristina Mladenovic or American Shelby Rogers in the next round.

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko was the first woman through to the last 16, needing just over an hour to dispatch Lesia Tsurenko 6-1 6-4.

Latvian Ostapenko will play either 23rd-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur or American Bethanie Mattek-Sands for a place in the quarter-finals.
