Muguruza out of WTA event with arm injury

Two-time grand slam winner Garbine Muguruza has withdrawn from the WTA’s Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in California due to a right arm injury.

The Spanish world No.7 pulled out of her scheduled second round clash with Victoria Azarenka, which would have been her first match since Wimbledon.

Muguruza lost her Wimbledon title after being knocked out in the second round last month by Belgium’s Alison van Uytvanck.

“I’ve been feeling some pain in my right arm for a couple of days and realised I am not ready to play the match, so hopefully I can recover for the next tournaments,” Muguruza said in a statement.

“The facilities in San Jose are very nice, especially the courts. This is a tournament I always play at the start of the US Open series so I hope to come back and see all my fans next year.”

Russian lucky loser Anna Blinkova replaces Muguruza in the draw and will now play Azarenka.
